XIII Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, Retired

Bishop Salmon was born in Natchez, Mississippi, January 30, 1934. Married Louise Hack in 1972 and has two children, Catherine and Edward, III.
Graduated from the University of the South in 1956 (B.A.) and from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1960 (B.D.). He was then ordained Deacon in June, 1960 and Priest in March 1961 in the Diocese of Arkansas.
Bishop Salmon has served a number of congregations. In Arkansas as Vicar of St. Andrew’s, Rogers; St. James’, Eureka Springs; St. Thomas’, Springdale; and Grace, Siloam Springs/ He was Rector of St. Andrew’s, Rogers 1963-68. He was then called to St. Paul’s, Fayetteville, as Associate Rector, became Rector the following year and served there until moving as Rector of St. Michael and St. George, Clayton, Missouri in 1978-89. He serves as Chairman of the Board of the Anglican Institute, as President of the Board, Kanuga Conferences, Hendersonville, NC; is a Trusteee of the University of the South and a member of the Board of Regents; a Board member of Voorhees College, Denmark, SC; Porter-Gaud School, Charleston, SC; Bishop Gadsden Community, Charleston, SC; York Place, Rock Hill, SC; Canterbury House, Charleston, SC; Vice-President of Nashotah House Seminary, Nashotah, WI; and is President of Province IV Bishops.
He was elected Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina, September 9, 1989 and consecrated February 24, 1990. Though he was scheduled to retire earlier, he continued serving as Acting Bishop until Mark Lawrence was consecrated on January 26, 2008.
